Sotomayor Calls Her Role in Inauguration a Tribute to Latinos
Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic justice in the history of the U.S. Supreme Court, told Efe Thursday that Vice President Joe Biden's request that she administer the oath of office for his second term is an "improbable" dream and "a tribute to the Latino community."

Growing up in a poor neighborhood in The Bronx, "they both would have never entered my mind, either one would have been equally improbable," she said, laughing.

"It is a tribute to the Latino community, to how important we have grown in America that a vice president of the U.S. would think it appropriate to ask the first Hispanic justice on the Supreme Court to swear him in," Sotomayor said.

"We've come to such a great point that a girl of Puerto Rican parents can be before the country and the world administering the oath to the vice president," said Sotomayor, one of the nine justices-for-life on {keyword} the high court.

Sotomayor will issue the oath to Biden next Sunday in a private ceremony and on Monday in a public ceremony before some 800,000 people at the Capitol.

The 58-year-old Sotomayor's story is one of "Yes we can" achieve the American Dream and she says it was made possible thanks to the struggle for racial integration in the United States.

In her 316-page just-released memoir "My Beloved World," Sotomayor says that she knew starting in childhood that she wanted to be a judge and that her tenacity helped her overcome the barriers of poverty and other adversity in a home with an alcoholic father and a mother who was often distant.

{keyword} In her memoir, a frank and disarming account, Sotomayor speaks about her insecurities and fears, her parents' fights, her handling of her diabetes and her "extraordinary journey" to the highest court in the United States.

Although her frankness carries with it a certain amount of "vulnerability," the justice says that she wants to encourage people facing challenges to pursue their dreams.

"I do feel a very big obligation to prove myself because as I say in my book, every time one of us fails, it is looked upon as if our community fails, and so we all have an obligation to work as hard as we can to succeed and to keep the doors open for those who follow us," she says.

My niece-in-law recently found out she is pregnan {keyword} t with her second. Not long ago, she had askedfor my help setting up an exercise program to help her lose weight from her first (not even oneyear old yet!). She informed me she was pregnant during the holidays by telling me how she started to do my exercise routines, but then had to stop because, well, she waspregnant.Congratulations! But ... why can't you exercise?I can't say this loud enough: Do not use being pregnant as an excuse to be sedentary and eatcrap.I did that with my fourth child four years ago and it's taken this long to undo the damage.Working out used to be a rout {keyword} ine for me. In fact, when I was in my 20s I was very much intobodybuilding. With all three of my older kids, I continued to work out - including lifting weights- throughout pregnancy. With my last, however, I simply stopped. Plus, I ate the grossest stuff. Itmakes me nauseous to think about it now. So don't do that.Check with your doctor first, of course, but there is no reason you cannot work out whilepr {keyword}egnant. Sure, there are certain things you shouldn't do - such as anything involving lying onyour back - but if you're perfectly healthy and it isn't considered a high-risk pregnancy, keepdoing what you're doing ... unless it's being sedentary; then I suggest starting with briskwalking.

Puerto Rico to Activate National Guard to Fight Crime, Smuggling
San Juan Puerto Rico's new governor is calling out th {keyword}e National Guard to help prevent drug and weapons smuggling.

Alejandro Garcia Padilla says soldiers will be stationed in ports and airports across the U.S. territory to help bolster security.

National Guard spokesman Maj. Paul Dahlen said Friday that he did not immediately know many soldiers will be involved or when they will be activated.

The executive order issued Thursday was Garcia's first as governor.

The National Guard was last activated in February 2010 for one year to help Puerto Rico fight rising crime on the island of 4 million people.

The new governor took office Wednesday, marking an ideological shift in the U.S. territory.

He was sworn in on a stage overlooking the Atlantic Ocean outside the Capitol building in San Juan amid the cheers of thousands of supporters from his party, which opposes statehood.

Garcia is a 41-year-old attorney and former local senator who narrowly defeated pro-statehood Gov. Luis Fortuno in November, thanks in part to support from labor unions angered when Fortuno laid o {keyword} ff more than 20,000 government workers to help close a budget deficit.

Garcia said one of his prioriti {keyword} es is to create jobs on an island where unemployment hovers above 13 percent, higher than in any U.S. state.

Based on reporting by The Associated Press.
